The speed of an electric motor in SI units can be determined as:
n = f x (2 / p) x 60

The torque for an electric motor in SI units can be calculated as:
T = P x 9.549 / n

Definitions:
<ul>
 <li>T = torque (Nm)</li>
 <li>P = power (watts)</li>
 <li>n = revolutions per minute (rpm)</li>
 <li>f = frequency of electrical power supply (Hz, cycles/sec, or 1/s)</li>
 <li>p = number of poles</li>
</ul>

The speed of an electric motor is influenced by the power supply frequency and the number of poles in the motor winding. Torque, on the other hand, represents the twisting force and is the driving force behind an electric motor. The power generated by the motor relies on its speed; this power is absent at 0% speed but reaches its peak at 100% speed.

When it comes to an induction motor, the speed is dictated by the number of poles in conjunction with the power frequency. For example, a 2-pole motor operating at 60 Hz equals:
RPM = 60*(2/2)*60 RPM = 3600 rpm

A motor with 4 poles at 60 Hz corresponds to:
RPM = 60*(2/4)*60 RPM = 1800 rpm

For motors with 6 poles, the speed is 1200 rpm, and so forth. A decrease in speed leads to an increase in torque; hence, an 8-pole motor exhibits four times the torque compared to a 2-pole motor but operates at one-fourth the speed of the latter.

*In the United States, a frequency of 60 Hz is predominant, while outside the US, it tends to be 50 Hz.
